CHARACTER
Name: Kaiji Itou
Canon: Ultimate Survivor Kaiji
Canon point: Between seasons 1 and 2 of the anime. Kaiji has been taken by the yakuza and tossed into the forced labor camp, where he is being held prisoner underground, doing backbreaking work for almost no money. Notably, Kaiji's left ear, along with all the fingers on his left hand, are scarred where they have been reattached a few months prior.
Age: 21
Summary: Kaiji is a young man from Tokyo who is your typical NEET - "No experience, education or training". He starts the series as a shiftless loser with no direction, prone to whining and crying about his situation rather than do anything about making his life better. When the opportunity to win big in some yakuza-sponsored gambles presents itself, Kaiji cautiously agrees, and his life is changed forever. He's thrown into life-or-death games that pit him and other desperate men against rich gangsters who only want to watch these people struggle for entertainment in sick games that are nearly impossible to win.
It's in this terrible situations where Kaiji rises to the top and does best, fighting tooth and nail and doing everything he can to bring everyone else around him up as well. He's not smart, but has a cleverness, charisma, and quick wit that shows itself at the darkest of times. However, those thrilling times of adrenalin-pumping excitement become what define his otherwise empty life. After escaping the first terrible game aboard the Espoir gambling ship, Kaiji agrees months later to something called the Human Derby for a high cash prize - a game where he ends up the only one alive out of ten contestants. Even that doesn't stop him, as he's determined to win anything against the higher members of the yakuza and bring them down. Even after risking and gambling away literal parts of his body, Kaiji still fails, and is hauled away to work hard labor in an undergrounds construction site for the next 15 years. Even facing this insurmountable defeat, Kaiji still plans and schemes to get the better of his captors and be free once again.
Powers/abilities: Nothing supernatural or unusual. Kaiji's strengths lie in his willingness to fight for survival, to gather up others who are downtrodden like himself. He can be inspiring, charismatic and strong when the chips are down - but things have to get bad first to motivate him.
Inventory: Nothing but the uniform on his back (Green shirt, black pants, work boots and gloves), safety goggles, and a yellow hardhat with the Teiai company logo on it.

Sentimental item: The Merecedes-Benz hood ornament from Endo's car that he stole. That little stunt (along with slashing Endo's tires) is the catalyst to Kaiji getting involved with the yakuza in the first place.

Lost memory #1: Being sent to the yakuza prison labor camp. Considering he will be showing up dressed like a construction worker, this will be pretty confusing for him. That uniform is a symbol of just how bad things get for him, a dire warning against him continuing to gamble and take risks far beyond what he can handle.
Lost memory #2: The events of the night post Human Derby, which were the games with Tonegawa and Hyoudou. He won't know how he got the scar on his face, how he lost his ears and fingers, or how they were reattached. Not knowing this, and along with his altered memory, he may think he and Sahara might actually have won the game, possibly even giving him some false hope. But those scars (and his uniform) will be hints to what really happened.
Altered memory: Sahara survived the Human Derby along with him. When Sahara insisted in joining Kaiji in his next gable, Kaiji tried very hard to dissuade him, but Sahara wouldn't listen. Thinking that Sahara survived the Derby would alleviate a lot of guilt he'd been carrying.
